Save The Lemon Tree

Where is the best place to go in Aberdeen?

It’s The Lemon Tree.

At least it was until two days ago when they announced their decision to go into liquidation. The grants from the Scottish Arts Council, local City Council and Lottery weren’t enough to keep it afloat.

Why did it fail after 15 years of entertaining Aberdeen and the surrounding area? I don’t know- everybody loves it. How can it not succeed?

Maybe it’s the fact that they don’t always put on the most populist acts. They cater for all musical and theatre tastes. That often doesn’t mean big box office takings.

Sure they could have put Shakespeare and kids’ shows on every week in the Theatre had raves every weekend. They could solely book rock music acts and let go the folk music, the jazz, the chamber music, the specialist and the avante garde.
They could stop all the money-losing children’s theatre and music workshops and hike their door prices in line with the big concert venues.
But then that wouldn’t be the Lemon Tree we all know and love.

If you’ve ever been to the Lemon Tree or just care about the arts in Scotland then make a donation here to save Aberdeen’s best venue. It’s through paypal , so it’s nice and secure. And if you do, your name will be on a hall of fame, should they succeed.

They need to raise £150,000 by the 18th of December or else that’s it. I know it’s Christmas…. but every little helps.

(Oh and I got my first ever job there…it just wouldn’t be right to sit back and let it close)

Misssy on stage at the Lemon Tree last Christmas…
minutes before she was dragged off screaming, “But I belonnnnng here!”.

December 7, 2007. Save the Lemon Tree. Leave a comment.
